If you’ve ever had an alcohol problem, whether it’s while you were on other drugs or not, I would suggest you seriously watch your alcohol intake. It’s probably good that Suboxone removes your desire to drink, and makes you feel sick. In that sense it’s kinda killing two birds with one stone.
Honestly man, is it realistic to stay away from the booze when you go on this holiday with your mates? There will be a lot of pressure on you to drink, and honestly it seems like you intend to drink. If you were dead set on abstinence, would you even go? Moderation is the key. There will probably be pressure to binge, and keep up with your friends. Don’t fall for it. Make up an excuse – that you’re on medication and you’re not supposed to drink too much. Whatever.
In the long run, if you think you can achieve total abstinence, go for it. But given you did AA for a while and you kept "relapsing", maybe it’s time to try another form of recovery. Different things work for different people. I spent years in a 12 step fellowship believing it was the only way to get real recovery. I kept relapsing, and because I believe I was powerless once I’d picked up, I relapsed HARD and nearly died every time. It took me years to realise it wasn’t working for me, and I tried something else – Suboxone, counselling and SMART recovery. So do what’s best for you, even if it’s harm minimisation.
