You got into the chat room the right way and the lounge is where people hang out and chat. But you’re right, often no one is in there. I used to just go into the chat room while I was on the forum in case anyone wanted to chat. Sometimes someone will see you in there and join you.
As to how it works, once you’re in the lounge, just type what you want to say in the window on the bottom left and it will appear in the large window on above where you just typed.
