Suboxone and Cocaine : Can One Treat the Other
According to the DATA 2000 law, Suboxone is an opioid and is permitted for the use in treatment of opioid addiction. Suboxone is an opioid drug and cocaine is a stimulant. There does not appear to be a reason why Suboxone and cocaine would be used to together for treatment. I think the FDA would not like this practice and a doctor’s buprenorphine license could be placed at risk.
Suboxone information can be found here. There are medications that can be used to reduce the cravings and other symptoms when getting off cocaine. Like opioid treatment, the treatment of cocaine addiction will require long-term individual or group therapy. The best place to obtain this is from your local addiction treatment center.
So, the answer is no, suboxone (buprenorphine) is not typically used in the treatment of cocaine addiction.
Mixing Suboxone and Cocaine:
Mixing suboxone and cocaine is a bad idea for several reasons. One is a depressant and the other is a stimulant. For many years this combination has been called a “speedball” and it is dangerous. It places a large stress on the body. A person could become too sedated with suboxone and then have an overdose on the cocaine. There may not be as much of a problem with the cocaine causing an overdose of suboxone. However, nothing is for sure. IV use of these will increase risk of sudden death.
The major problem with suboxone appears to be with the mixing of it with other stimulants. These would include alcohol, Xanax, Valium, Ambien, etc. There have been documented deaths from this combination.
