Hey guys.
I’ve been thinking over whether to get you guys involved in my latest little mission, as it kinda blows my anonymity a bit. But stuff it.
I’m on a mission to raise funds for one of my local drug & alcohol recovery organisations, Windana. They specialise in inpatient rehabilitation (a therapeutic community on a farm outside my city), supported accommodation, counselling, among other things.
It’s not as straight forward as me just saying "I wanna raise money. Give me your money". I’ve set up a page through every-day-heroes where people can donate directly to the service. It’s a legitimate charity, so you might be able to write it off on tax depending on your country’s laws. Most importantly:
I will be living my life completely alcohol and drug free from July 18, 2011 until January 18, 2012. That’s 6 months! An Australian living without beer for 6 months? That’s illegal! Unless …
So far I have not had one sip of alcohol for almost 2 months. Has it been challenging? Yes. Has my social life taken a hit? Slightly. Perhaps I will join a Scrabble club
As a side note, I have also quit smoking for nearly 2 months as well, despite this not being a part of the deal. ( Tom’s Quit Counter )
Now, no doubt some recovering alcoholics will be saying "So what? I haven’t had a drink since 1963!" Please understand that my quest for 6 months of abstinence is in recognition of all the recovering alcoholics who spend every day avoiding alcohol in order to stay on top of their disease. Also, given abstinence from alcohol is not a part of my recovery plan, avoiding alcohol is as hard for me as it is for any Australian. Plus, it’s for a good cause damn it!
So I ask of you guys. Dig deep. It’ll give you more of a warm fuzzy feeling than any drugs every will.
